Nairobi

Nairobi is the capital of Kenya, and the largest city in the region. Its name derives from the Masaai term for 'cool water' - which seems ironic for a landlocked state, until we consider the  importance of the Nairobi river to life in the region.

The city is home to over 3 million people, and can be a nightmare to traverse during rush hours. However, it is also known for its unique blend of African and Indian culture, its distinctive varieties of coffee and tea, and its undisputed importance as the unofficial safari capital of Africa.

The Nairobi Experience

The city of Nairobi has a lot to offer; careful planning will be vital to make the most of your experience. For instance, the fabled Masaai market - a large collective of artisans selling local handicrafts and curios - shifts its primary location according to day of the week! You can purchase a variety of souvenirs here, but haggling will be necessary to avoid inflated prices.

The sheer variety of cuisine at hand is sure to offer something for everyone - from streetside eateries serving a distinct Indo-African twist on traditional dishes, to higher-end outlets such as The Carnivore, where freshly-roasted meat is cleaved into specified cuts at your very table!

The Nairobi National Park (and the smaller Hell's Gate National Park just beyond) comprise the world's only major game reserve to share a boundary with a metropolitan centre. Their combined area of 190 square kilometres is difficult to cover in a day (particularly on foot); a multi-day excursion will increase your chances of spotting majestic creatures (giraffes, lions, cheetahs, rhinos, among others) and their aerial counterparts (over 500 species of birds)!
