Lagos

Overview

'Lagos' is named after the Portuguese word for 'lagoon', and the immediacy of the Atlantic is a tangible part of the city's topography. What began as a cluster of loosely-interconnected landfills has evolved into a complex duet between land and water, with the mainland and islands all cultivating unique facets of Lagos' multi-cultural, magnanimous  aura.

The city served as the official capital till 1992 (and remains the hip, unofficial capital to date). Come explore the largest metropolis in Nigeria - and feel the pulsating, amphibious heartbeat of Africa!

The Lagos Experience

Getting the most out of Lagos requires a bit of patience - the scenic ocean drives and elevated highways boast an abundance of sports cars idling next to auto rickshaws in traffic snarls. Be sure to avoid arterial roads during peak hours!

The sights and sounds are worth every second, of course. The Lagos Bar Beach is named for its picturesque sandbar (and not the abundant venues for imbibement).

Tarkwa Bay (and the nearby Lighthouse Beach) are breathtaking; the path from the Bay to the old lighthouse is particularly pleasant, and perfect for a romantic stroll.

You also shouldn't miss Victoria Island - the booming commercial hub of Lagos - with its distinctive skyline and various well-developed entertainment centres.

The music scene in Lagos is finally finding the recognition it deserves. Genres such as Sakara music, highlife  and Afrobeat are spun nightly at discotheques and music halls, and for good reason: this city practically invented them!

Finally, if you wish to shop for souvenirs, street stalls are ubiquitous in the city . Head to Lekki Art Market for a closely curated selection of West African art and handicrafts at negotiable prices, or King's Plaza if you miss air-conditioned shopping malls.
