Trivandrum

Trivandrum (short for Thiruvananthapuram, lit. "City of Lord Anantha") is the capital (and largest city) of the Indian state of Kerala. It lies on the western coast, near the country's southern tip, and is the main point of access to a state popular as God's Own Country.

Trivandrum wears many masks - major IT Hub, storied historic centre, home to the world's richest temple - but its real identity is its easygoing and hospitable people. Strike up conversations, wander the coast, make plans based on informed opinions.

The Trivandrum Experience

The summer months promise pleasant nights but hot, humid days; rent an air-conditioned vehicle for ease of travel!

The Padmanabhaswamy Temple remains Trivandrum's primary icon. The centrepiece - a gold idol of the presiding deity, Vishnu - has been the Emperor of Travancore since the late 18th Century! The nearby East Fort is a stately remnant of the fortifications that once encircled the Temple.

Other  major attractions are the Napier Museum and Zoo, Golden Hill Palace (with its spacious lawns and auditoriums), Kowdiar Palace (home to the Travancore royal family), and the spiralling red brick beauty of Indian Coffee House, Thampanoor (designed by Laurie Baker, the father of sustainable architecture, with natural air-conditioning on a shoestring budget).

Shrug off your fatigue with an evening walk down Veli Beach, popular for its breathtaking sunsets and abundant choice of adventure sports.

Restaurants serving south-Indian cuisine abound all over Trivandrum; be sure to try a thaali (or platter), which typically contains plain rice with as many as a dozen dry and curried dishes on the side!

Of course, Trivandrum is only the beginning - the world-renowned beach town of Kovalam lies a mere 17 kilometres away. The city is also just 27 km from the backwaters, a picturesque network of interconnected lakes and canals covering a third of Kerala. Also within reach are Kochi, a cosmopolitan port metropolis; and Kanyakumari, a rare point of confluence between the Arabian Sea, Bay of Bengal, and Indian Ocean.
