Bogota

Nestled comfortably upon a plateau in the Bogotá Savannah, the eponymous city of Bogotá is the capital of Colombia, and - with an average altitude of 2,640 metres above sea level - the third highest national capital in the world (after Quito and Thimphu).

The city predates all our historical records of it - the current site found favour among the earliest human settlers for its perennially cool climate and mixture of grassland and verdant forests. There is proof of hunter-gatherers living on this site as long ago as 12,000 B.C.E.

The Bogotán Experience

The first thing you will notice upon entering the city is the improbably-rich diversity of its skyline. Architecture in Bogotá is characterized by its mix of Spanish colonial, post-Baroque and modern influences, with steel-and-glass façades in downtown Bogotá vying for space with the centuries-old splendour wrought by conquistadores in the historical part of town.

The La Candelaria district in downtown Bogotá is a major highlight. More than 50% of all visitors to the country pass through here - and find luxurious hotels as well as inexpensive hostels to accommodate them.  Attractions include The Gold Museum, which houses 60,000 relics over three storeys; and the church on Monserrate mountain, which dominates central Bogotá as an omnipresent landmark for pilgrims and residents alike.

The perpetually cool weather makes Bogotán terrain ideal for pedestrians; however, visitors are encouraged to ride the aerial tramway up Monserrate, and to try the TransMilenio system of rapid transit buses (distinct from and supplementing common public transport). Seasoned riders can easily cut their commutes into half; remember to ask for directions to avoid backtracking!

The city wears its festive air as a testament to its tenacity. Your visit to Bogotá promises to put you in touch with the history of civilization - and also the more organic history of celebration that punctuates all human endeavours.
